The GTS drive was held at the Mallorca racetrack and on the roads of the island. After travelling for 20 hours we arrived at the circuit where the Cayman GTS were lined up, all ready to go. The first part of the drive was on the racetrack, the drive back to the hotel forming the second.
After a short walk from the hospitality area we entered the pit-lane where we were informed that a gentleman by the name of Walter Rohrl would be our instructor for the day. Yes, it was Walter Rohrl, world rally champion, the legend himself! Imagine the feeling I was going through when following a legend whom you have idolized all your life, and all of a sudden he is in front of you when you least expect it. To top it all, he is showing you the quickest way around the racetrack!
After this big surprise it was back to business of driving the GTS on the Mallorca circuit, which is basically a motorcycle track with tight corners and narrow in width. You can tailor the driving position as per your requirements and get comfortable to drive the car to its potential. The tight nature of the circuit was good in a sense, because one could exploit the agility of the GTS to the fullest. Having adjusted the steering and the seat to my convenience, I selected the Sport Plus mode and put the car in drive and rolled it gently through the pit-lane. After exiting the pit-lane the first gear was selected via the paddle shifter on the left, and, as I put my foot down, all hell broke loose as the 340 PS were put down on the track. It was fast and furious as it sprinted down the straight in excess of 200 km/h before hitting the anchors and shifting down through the box to the second with the help of the paddle shifters.
Now for the tight right-hand hairpin bend, and then the car was darting through corners as if it were on rails. It was good that we finished driving on the racetrack first, where we could let off all the steam. Now it was time to enjoy the car on the country roads. Time to select the Normal mode as I hit the motorway and some interesting country roads. It was a real pleasure to drive this two-seater sports car on the road thanks to the good ride quality and sharp handling. One could throw it around corners with a lot of confidence. There were a couple of long tunnels and to enjoy the sound further you have to push the exhaust switch and it opens the flaps so that you can hear the flat-six sing in all its glory.
I have driven a number of sports cars and this is one of the best. This car makes you feel comfortable and it does not scare the living daylights out of you. Even someone with mediocre driving skills can drive the Cayman GTS and enjoy the car.
