Home / Home / Dream Realised: Honda Mobilio 1.5 i-DTEC Road Test

So far as performance is concerned, do not expect the Mobilio to be the hottest MPV around since the main purpose of this 1.5-litre diesel engine is to provide good driveability and fuel efficiency, both of which it does pretty well. Strong proof of that is the excellent low- and mid-range delivery and a stunning overall fuel efficiency figure of 17.5 km/l. However, just to keep the performance-seekers happy, the Mobilio goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 15.54 seconds and would do a top speed of 143.75 km/h (true speed).

It might not be the fastest car around, but it impressed us with its handling and ride quality. The steering is light and responsive, although one wished it would communicate a little better while going through the twisties. The suspension in the Mobilio is similar to that in the Amaze, but it is now feels a tad softer due to the extra weight. This, however, has not compromised the ride quality at all. The Mobilio does not bounce around like a ball when the road surface deteriorates. In fact, it feels very sure-footed and maintains its composure at all times. Another bit that impressed us was the way it handles in the corners. It maybe 98 millimetres taller than the Amaze, but it never let me realise the increase in height. Body-roll did become perceptible, but it was not bothersome. The 189 mm of ground clearance makes the Mobilio much more manageable on rough roads. Its brakes also provide enough bite and feedback so that one can relax and enjoy the drive.

Overall, I would say that Honda have read our dreams quite accurately, except for that part about the interior. They have come up with a product that not only looks good, but is also practical, economical, efficient, and feels more like a car than an MPV. The variant we tested is priced at Rs 9.95 lakh (ex-showroom, Pune), which is a bit steep, but there is hardly anything else in the market that is this good. It is an MPV targeted at the individual buyer and not a fleet-owner. This raises the Mobilio’s exclusivity, a factor that none of its competitors enjoy.
