Italian car manufacturers Alfa Romeo have revealed that they are planning to develop a BMW 5 series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class rival.

Speaking to the media at an event, FIAT CEO Sergio Marchionne, said just last year that, “a flagship saloon is out of the question for a long, long time,” and if sources are to believed, the Italian giants might be back on track with a successor to the Alfa Romeo 166 model. Rumor mills have stated that this new sedan is centered on Maserati launching the new Ghibli and the possibility that its shortened Quattroporte platform could be used for this BMW-Merc rival.

Various reports are also going around on the net that this new Alfa will be powered by the same twin-turbocharged V6 engine, which will be complemented by a turbocharged MultiAir four-cylinder unit prepared for the entry level model. Well, although this tussle between these automotive giants will be for the European market, it won’t come to us as a surprise if FIAT India decided to bring the Alfa Romeo brand with this offering in the near future since both the 5 series and the E-Class are already quite popular here.
