Driving the VW Tiguan in India

What are Tiguan’s engine specs and performance figures like?
Both the Comfortline and Highline come with a new 2.0-litre TDI and latest seven-speed DSG. You’ll be happy to know that the diesel motor is free from any emissions issues, and makes a decent 143 PS and 340 Nm of torque. While the new transmission is not related to the old and infamous seven-speed DSG available in India.

The potent powertrain comes with a smart all-wheel-drive system, which under normal driving tends to power the front wheels, but if need be, can distribute torque to all the four wheels. Another interesting feature is that during coasting (when the driver is off the gas) the transmission decouples from the engine to help conserve some more fuel.

But it’s the refinement of the engine that really impresses us. It barely sounds like a diesel and is hardly audible during idling. It’s only when it crosses the 2,000 rpm mark that a sporty hum can be heard as the power surges in. The DSG transmission does a terrific job of smooth power delivery, right from the moment you slam the accelerator pedal. The Tiguan is quick off it’s feet and even with it’s 1.7-tonne weight feels effortless if you accelerate hard.

How’s the ride quality and handling?
We’ve already seen MQB platform based sedans in India and have appreciated their ride quality and handling abilities. The Tiguan feels very similar, only a bit taller. So, there’s no wallowing and pitching like large SUVs do and the Tiguan feels impressively planted at high speeds and during fast cornering.

What we liked the most is the sorted ride quality. Like most European cars it’s tuned to be slightly firm yet compliant. The firmness can be felt more on the rear bench, but it’s not really uncomfortable. You don’t have to think twice while going over broken roads as it pretty much irons out everything. The only hitch here is the comparatively low 149 mm ground clearance for an SUV. The highlight, however, is that the Tiguan feels safe even while driving at highways speeds, which will be very reassuring for the family that owns one.

Should I buy one?

As a product, you really can’t find much fault in the VW Tiguan. The subtle design, classy cabin, segment defying fit and finish and decent equipment list make it a phenomenal package. There’s enough power from the refined diesel engine. And like most cars from the Volkswagen stable, the taut ride and great dynamics make it so much more enjoyable to drive. The only factor which gives it a slight disadvantage is the price, which can get you a more premium brand or even a large seven-seater SUV.
