So, what’s it really like? It’s not a sports car because it’s over two tonnes. It’s not a luxury limo because it has just two doors and plush but limited rear seating. It’s as expensive as the most expensive and powerful sports car from another marque located down the road in Stuttgart, but it isn’t anything like that.

So what is the S Coupé? It’s something which offers a business-class interior packed with every imaginable creature comfort. Yet it’s not for the enthusiast with raging hormones and a freshly-issued driving licence. Truth be told, it’s for those who want it all after having experienced it all. It’s for those whose ship came in years ago and who’ve enjoyed the good things in life and, yet, want it all put together on a set of wheels. This is the car you turn to if you don’t want a Rolls-Royce Wraith or, for that matter, another timeless, high-maintenance classic. This is a car which will cocoon you in plush, five-star hotel-room quality and then do 250 km/h in a matter of seconds. It’s your drive into the sunset, star-class, with LED streaks in your wake.

Is There a Less Extreme Alternative?

Mercedes-Benz S 500 Coupe web

Yes, it’s still a Mercedes-Benz, and, yes, it still has a twin-turbo V8, but, in the S 500 Coupé, you have 130 PS and 200 Nm less. That’s still 455 PS and 700 Nm, and, by any standard, that’s still quick and effortless. The S 500 also offers the wafting ride quality that the S-Class is famous for, but comes minus the bits which push you to go faster; the active bolsters and ‘AMG’ badging, for instance. Also, at Rs 2 crore (ex-showroom), it’s 23 per cent less expensive.
