Mahindra have just taken the wraps off their refreshed XUV 500, and we got a chance to test it out on Mahindra’s track in India’s motor city – Chakan. Here’s what we think of the Indian marque’s premium SUV

When you think of SUVs, the first word that probably pops into your head is big. Big on proportions, big on power, big on comfort, big on space, big on fuel consumption and carrying a big fat price tag to boot. As such, people who drive around in them are also often referred to as ‘bade log’ or big people because SUVs have been the play-toy of the rich and famous, those who can afford the indulgence, and even extravagance of SUVs. The XUV though, while imbibing a majority of the cliché attributes of an SUV, is a little different in terms of a few, highly significant traits.
In terms of looks, Mahindra seem to have lifted their inspiration straight out of the SUV handbook. It looks imposing, aggressive, and stylish. The XUV is more angular than the traditionally boxy SUVs though, and it was always a good looking car, this new avatar takes these looks to another level. The car’s face sees the addition of chrome embellishments to the grille and a readjustment so that it isn’t offset against the lights but on one even level, and swanky new headlamps with a thin strip of light running through the middle. This strip of light works as a parking light rather than a daytime running light though, and I think Mahindra may have missed a trick there. The fog lamps up front have been given a tweak too, with chrome accents and an L-shaped design adding to the style quotient. There’s also an under-bumper bash plate to add to that sporty feel, but it is made out of plastic rather than the more traditional metal, and felt a little too pliable to offer much protection.
