The all-new Skoda Octavia vRS iV is the plug-in hybrid successor to the popular model. It was set for a reveal at the Geneva Motor Show that never went down. Here’s what it’s all about.

The Octavia vRS iV is the first time that Czech major Škoda Auto are offering a plug-in hybrid iteration of their high-performance Octavia vRS. Building on the new-generation model, the new Octavia vRS iV retains the instantly recognisable albeit evolved Skoda design language but gets a cleaner but definitely more potent driveline. Though it’s a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) that can run on electricity alone, or in tandem with variation, the combined peak output of 180 kW (245 hp) matches that of the previous 2.0 TSI model (that was offered in limited numbers in India recently). However, it’s the higher peak torque of 400 Nm that is significant, being 30 Nm more than its predecessor. Another point to note is that a major portion of that figure comes from the electric motor so a large chunk is all the more instantly available.

The driveline in the new Octavia vRS iV comprises a 1.4 TSI four-cylinder turbo-petrol combustion engine paired with an 85-kW electric motor that is capable of 116 hp and 330 Nm. A six-speed DirectShift Gearbox (DSG), a dual-clutch automatic transmission, drives the front wheels. With a 13-kWh battery pack, there is up to 60 km of pure electric range on offer. The electric motor drive capability also means a lower CO2 rating of 37 g/km, making the Octavia vRS iV ready for the more stringent Euro 6d norms that come into effect on the first day of 2021. Even so, its performance is more than adequate: 0-100 km/h in 7.3 seconds and a top speed of 225 km/h.

The Octavia vRS iV gets a sporty yet elegant interior with all the modern connectivity features and equipment one may expect from a cutting-edge Skoda model. Dual display units and a sporty flat-bottomed steering wheel are joined by carbon-fibre accents and ambient lighting that further highlight its sporty character.

Since this officially is the replacement of the Skoda Octavia vRS, we should expect to see this model in India soon. For now, Skoda Auto are engaged in 3D printing the CIIRC RP95-3D respirators to facilitate availability to front-line emergency personnel who are in dire need of personal protective equipment.
