VW_Jetta_smallWell, this news might come as a pleasant surprise to the majority of our readers, but the fact is that the Volkswagen Jetta is officially the worlds fastest hybrid in the world now.

A modified hybrid Jetta has managed to achieve a remarkable top speed of 298.3kmph, setting a new world record at the Bonneville salt flats recently. Although German marquee Volkswagen haven’t clearly stated the exact modifications which were carried out on this Jetta, we can deduce from the pictures that low-drag aerodynamic wheels and other go-faster kits makes it a far cry from its roadgoing sibling. VW states that the car was prepared according to SCTA rules.

The regular production Jetta hybrid uses a 150PS 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine mated to a 30PS electric motor and claims a 0-100kmph figure of 9.3 seconds. The previous record for the fastest hybrid in the world was a Volvo hybrid truck which touched 265kmph.
