What better a way to ride into the sunset than to have a gorgeous coupé which combines five-star interior quality with sports-car dynamics and 585 German thoroughbreds? Let’s make one thing perfectly clear. The AMG S 63 Coupé is not a sports car. Hear me out. What it is, is a two-door Maybach, albeit without the name-tag.
The S-Class Coupé came in to replace the CL-Class, which was one of the most beautiful cars to behold from the last decade. Of course, looks are subjective, but when a car can stop people in their tracks, you know it’s got style. And style is something the S-Class was never short of. The S-Class Coupé? Well, that seems to have gotten a double helping.
The svelte lines mask the fact that it is still an S-Class and that it weighs over two tonnes. The coupé lines and sloping roof, with huge glasses on the side windows, together with its actual proportions make it look truly one of a kind. The wide grille with what is a complex array of LEDs in formation looks spectacular, especially the light signature it bears when the car is turned on. The long bonnet also has a prominent power dome, pointing to the fact that the engine bay needed the additional ceiling height. The swooping lines down the side of the car are complemented by the huge wheel-arches, which, in India, house 19” wheels with respectable 45-profile tyres at the front and 40 at the rear. Yes, there are fancy 20- and 21-inch wheels, too, but then there’s the risk of even greater damage with our ever-changing road surface characteristics. Walk past those massive rear wheels and the AMG GT-like tail-lamps wrap around and lead into the rather compact boot.
