The new Jeep Compass has been launched, priced from Rs 14.95 lakh for the petrol variant to Rs 20.65 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the top-end diesel. Jeep have announced that the Compass amassed over 5,000 bookings already. We drove the car ahead of its launch, check out our first drive review.

Jeep India have revealed that a bulk of the bookings so far was taken up by the diesel variants of the car. Taking this into consideration, they will begin deliveries for the diesel cars first, from August 6. This will be followed by the automatic petrol variant around Diwali. The manual petrol variant will have the longest waiting period.

The Sport and Longitude trims are available in two-wheel drive (front-wheel drive) only. The top-of-the-line trim, Limited, comes with both two-wheel and four-wheel drive along with Jeep’s Active Drive with Selec-Terrain Traction Management System that lets the driver chose from four terrain modes – Auto, Mud, Sand and Snow. The Selec-Terrain system is capable of sending all the available torque to one wheel should the need for it arise. It also features Rear-axle Disconnect technology with a Power Transfer Unit (PTU) which manages the four-wheel-drive system. It responds to driver inputs and road conditions and switches between two-wheel and four-wheel drive. The Compass also features an FSD (Frequency Sensitive Damping) suspension that is normally see in performance cars. Jeep India claim that the suspension has been tested extensively for Indian conditions.

The Compass will be available in India with two engine options – the 2.0-litre MultiJet II turbo diesel and the 1.4-litre MultiAir petrol. The diesel engine churns out 173 PS and a peak torque of 350 Nm and will be available with a six-speed manual only. However, customers have the option of choosing between a four-wheel-drive or two-wheel-drive. The petrol engine produces 162 PS and a peak torque of 250 Nm. Customers can choose if they want the six-speed manual or the seven-speed twin-clutch automatic (DDCT) gearbox. Unlike the diesel variant, the petrol will be available as a two-wheel-drive only. All variants are BS IV-compliant and are scalable to BS-VI when needed.

The Compass is currently available in three trims – Sport, Longitude and Limited. There are a total of ten variants to choose from.
