Volkswagen have showcased the XL Sport powered by the world’s most powerful two-cylinder engine.

The XL Sport is the faster, sportier and much quicker avatar of the XL1 super-miler. While the latter promised 100 km/l, the Sport promises a 5.7 seconds sprint from 0-100 km/h and revs up to 11,000 RPM! The engine in use is the 1,198cc L-twin from the Ducati 1199 Superleggera. With Ducati being owned by Audi, there’s no reason to not share bits here and there, is there?

So, what we have is 200 PS from the L-twin being sent through a 7-speed DSG automatic transmission which is more than enough to deliver a sub-6-second run to 100 km/h and agile performance to a car which, with its lightweight construction and incredibly low overall weight, should feel just as nimble as its two-wheeled sibling; or that’s the hope.
