Inside the car, however, things are a bit simple. The cabin layout is smart with distinctive features like a dominating seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system and neatly integrated a-c vents. But the most interesting bit inside is the stylish and youthful digital instrument console. This is a five-seater hatch though the space seems to be a bit tight for five adults. Of course, we shall reserve our judgement on that until a proper road test. Renault claim that the KWID has the best-in-class boot volume and it surely looks spacious enough but the verdict on that is still on hold.
Renault will be launching the KWID with an 800-cc three-pot, four valve/cylinder, DOHC petrol motor, which we guess will produce 45-50 PS and about 70 Nm of torque. This engine will be mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, which will supply power and torque to the front wheels. It weighs 670 kilos, making it the lightest hatchback after the Tata Nano. On the safety front, Renault did mention an optional airbag variant, though things are not yet clear on the ABS front.
The company plans to launch the KWID just before the festive season at a price tag of Rs 3 to 4 lakh, which will make it a highly competitive small hatch on sale in India. The KWID will lock horns with the mighty, sales-chart leader Maruti Alto and Hyundai’s Eon. We are eager to see how well-made this new Renault is, for, going by its looks, it seems highly promising.
