Speaking of fitting in, the interior is a quality affair with dark brown leather, contrast-stitched to stand out and accentuate the attention to detail. The seats ensure you fit in just fine and are very comfortable. They are joined by a set of knobs on the inside which let you adjust the lumbar support as well as the bolsters for the upper body and thighs. If you want them automated, you would have to choose the AMG E 63. The equipment level is good and there are a number of useful bits such as the 360º camera, satellite navigation, and the easy-to-use connectivity features which make connecting your mobile phone via cable or Bluetooth not as demanding as you would expect. The surround-sound audio system has speakers positioned all round, and, with the ‘LOGIC7’ box ticked in the COMAND infotainment system, you can enjoy an immersive audio experience, with the top up or down.
One salient aspect to factor in is the space. Unlike most other convertibles, the E Cabrio also offers decent leg-room at the rear. A particular highlight is the Easy Entry system, which makes use of one silver-finish lever on the front seat. Lift and drop the front seat-back forward and the seat moves ahead electrically to allow for quick access to the rear seats. The rounded shoulder support may seem a bit intrusive for taller occupants, but it’s comfortable none the less and you don’t have to worry about being squeezed behind the front occupants.
The front occupants, meanwhile, have got it all. The COMAND screen is multi-functional and displays everything from the radio to the hugely appreciated 360° surround camera. There’s even an Air Scarf to keep your neck warm in the event of cold drafts – something straight out of the SLK. The Aircap deflector on top of the windscreen in the roof-frame uses the beauty of modern aerodynamics to ensure your hair-do isn’t messed up after a spot of spirited driving — it also can keep one’s wig in place; just saying.
