Export to be the focus of new facility
The state government of Gujarat has decided to allot 500 acres of land to India’s largest car-makers, Maruti Suzuki, to set up their third facility in the country. Incidentally, this plant, scheduled to come up near Sanand, will be Maruti Suzuki’s first facility outside Haryana.
The Gujarat government seeks to develop the region as an auto hub, with the Tatas and General Motors having already established their plants there. Expected to go into production from 2015, the Sanand plant will have an initial capacity of about 2.5 lakh vehicles, mostly catering to the export market. The plant is likely to build the A-Star, Estilo and Swift. Maruti have so far exported 59,450 A-Star cars, the only one from their stable to get that privilege.
