Google’s progress in the world or autonomous motoring took another step with the announcement that their car is ready for testing on public roads.
The autonomous car is something very different from those offered by the likes of BMW, GM, Mercedes and Volvo in that the company aims to have the car without a steering wheel or pedals of any kind. Google doesn’t want any human involvement in the commute process (as this won’t be driving per se). That basically means it should seat four, going by the size of it, but may grow to seat even more.
BMW have a self-driving car, but it has a steering wheel which also turns itself, as do Mercedes-Benz and Volvo. However, while the others are being track tested, Volvo aims to have as many as 100 autonomous cars on the streets of Gothenburg, their home town, in the very near future, with some examples already being testing on public roads.
The Google car is being tested on a closed track but encouraging results mean that the testing process will move to public roads soon.
