After a full day’s drive we finally reached the grand gate of Dhordo Tent City near the Dhordo Village. A majestic ‘Rann Utsav’ signboard welcomed us to this constellation of tents just on the edge of the Greater Rann. This place is usually deserted for most part of the year but since it was festival time, it really served as an oasis in the desert. There were people all around enjoying the festivities. Soothing traditional folk music filled our ears as we sat down to have dinner in a massive tented hall. The day had come to an end and it was simply amazing.
The following day started with a visit to the Rann where the white salt glistened under the soft sunlight. Even though the sun was out, the atmosphere stayed pleasant and soothing. We drove the Honda Amaze on the salt although I would not recommend this as the salt can seriously corrode the exposed metal bits underneath the car. Anyway, after a thorough wash the car was once again ready for a 70-kilometre trip to Kala Dungar or Black Mountain. It is a small mountain located on the edge of the Rann and also a viewing point for curious tourists. On a clear day you can see the horizon quite clearly from Kala Dungar. However, it was just too hazy on the day of our visit and we could not see much.
