So it stings like a bee, but does it glide like a butterfly? Well, that is a tough one. I will start with the goodness first. Being clamped in that snug bucket-seat you are bound to throw the GLA into corners with enthusiasm and if the surface is smooth enough, you will exit those corners with amazement writ large on your visage. The sporty suspension set-up, which inclines towards the stiffer side, minimises body-roll and allows you to go from apex to apex without a hint of discomfiture. The electrically-assisted steering turns that into a hearty smile with its superb feel and feedback. It is well-weighted for enthusiastic driving. With just the push of a button you can add some more weight for a sportier feel. It handles like a track-tool and sticks to the intended line like a JDAM locked on its target. If you approach a corner too hot, a gentle dab on the brake pedal orders the superb four-piston front and two-piston rear callipers to bite the massive cross-drilled brake rotors to help shed speed rapidly. And with the electronic safety net working overtime you can push the GLA like a speed-loving maniac with the assurance of returning home with all limbs intact after a fun-filled day.
However, here is the not-so-impressive part. There is hardly any doubt about the GLA’s performance and handling on smooth and even roads, but on most of the Indian roads it somewhat disappoints. And the reason for this is the stiff suspension set-up. Yes, the same set-up that lets you return to your childhood and become a hooligan on smooth roads results in a lot of jarring experience on rough/uneven and bumpy roads. These jars are then directed straight into the cabin, which hampers the ride quality. Given the fact that most Indian roads are uneven and bumpy, driving the GLA becomes quite an unpleasant experience.
Still there are some redeeming points. For instance, it will win you over with its performance and handling on a racetrack or similar road surface. It looks handsome and has all the goodies you expect from a Mercedes plus you get an entry into Club AMG. I understand that at Rs 69.90 lakh (ex-Mumbai) the GLA 45 AMG is by no means a cheap car, but that is the price you pay to own one of the world’s most powerful four-cylinder production engine and the exclusivity of being part of the AMG family.
