American automobile giants Ford are on top of the world with their famous muscle car, the Mustang, winning the best selling sports coupé in the world for the fourth consecutive year. This year the Ford Mustang celebrates its 55th anniversary, now calling the historic day National Mustang Day; well, it is American.
Ford Mustangs are sold in 146 global markets and in total sold 113,066 units across said markets in 2018 according to data from IHS Markit based on new vehicle registrations for all sports car segments. The bulk of these sales come from the company’s home country, with the US sales amounting to 75,842 units sold in 2018. This makes the Ford Mustang not only the highest selling sports coupé in the world, but also the best selling sports car in the US.
As mentioned earlier, this is the fourth consecutive year that the Mustang has topped the sports coupé charts with the current sixth-generation Mustang selling over 500,000 unit since 2015. The company have also picked up a half point in global shares last year, capturing 15.4 per cent of the segment. Ford says that this is partly due to the launch of the new Ford Mustang Bullitt, which sold like hot cake, exceeding their global sales forecast by 25 per cent.
“We broke the mold when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago,” said Jim Farley, Ford president, global markets. “Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupé in the world.”
