Want V8 power and throb and still be proud of driving an efficient car? Get the new S63 AMG with 5.5-litre V8 Biturbo

Though SLS was the show-stopper and the most electrifying one among the AMG line-up, I was a little curious about this S63 AMG standing out with its special matte finish silver colour.Well, the colour did attract me towards the car and so it did many others once I was out on the road driving through the traffic. But what really aroused my interest was the 5.5-litre V8 Biturbo doing duty under the S63 AMG’s hood.

With the world going green, AMG have also decided to contribute their mite without compromising their trademark performance. And thus comes the downsized 5.5-litre Biturbo unit in the S63, which replaces the old 6.2-litre, naturally aspirated motor. Though the displacement has gone down, the performance is only on the rise with a maximum power output of 544 PS (20 PS extra) and a colossal torque of 800 Nm (170 Nm more than the outgoing engine and a whopping 150 Nm more than what you get in the SLS AMG). If that torque figure doesn’t leave you astonished, let me also mention that all this torque is available from as low as 2,000 rpm and all the way up to 4,500 rpm. This makes the S63 an exciting drive since you have as much torque at your disposal as you need through the complete mid-range. Another interesting bit about the new S63 AMG comes in the form of its seven-speed, multi-clutch transmission (MCT) that replaces the traditional torque converter with a self-acting wet clutch. This new MCT facilitates exceptionally quick shifts in the manual mode with the paddle shifters mounted behind the steering wheel.

But what is the whole point of this new 5.5-litre Biturbo? As mentioned earlier, this one makes more power and consumes less fuel. With an impressive slash of 25 per cent in fuel consumption, the new V8 is definitely the way to go. Also incorporated into the car is the start-stop function (that acts only while driving in ‘C’, that is, the ‘controlled efficiency’ mode), which switches off the engine every single time it comes to a halt and starts it as soon as you place your foot on the accelerator.

Practicality and luxury of a premium sedan tagged with immensely thrilling V8 power – that’s the E63 AMG for you

The date was set with AMG and after experiencing exhilarating drives in the SLS AMG and S63 AMG, I was looking for an option that would make perfect sense for the entrepreneur who always dreamed of lightning-fast 0-100 km/h runs when he was young but was forced to drive around in an executive sedan to protect his image in the industry as a sane businessman. How about a Mercedes-Benz? Let us take the E-Class for its excellence in the current market scenario and spruce it up to give killer performance when driven by the enthusiast. That is what AMG must have thought and made the E63 AMG. The 6.2-litre naturally aspirated V8 pumps out 525 PS of peak power and 630 Nm of peak torque. The engine has been mated with the same seven-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT as seen on the S63 AMG and shifts through the cogs in as little as 100 milliseconds. With 0-100 km/h coming in a scant 4.5 seconds, the E63 AMG talks of serious performance.

All this is a known standard when you see the AMG badge on the bootlid. But what makes the E63 an amazing package is the balance it strikes between luxury and performance, between comfort and sporty character. The E63 AMG comes with three suspension settings. In the comfort mode, you can enjoy your daily luxurious drive through the town. Put it in the middle setting and it adds sufficient stiffness for sportiness and the final setting will transform your E-Class into something that you might not mind taking to the racetrack too. However, the light-weight steering might pose a little problem there.

All in all, the E63 AMG comes as a very good package to live with for someone who is crazy about performance and yet roots for a luxurious sedan. For a little more fun, AMG also offer a performance package with the E63 AMG that fine-tunes the electronic dampers and offers a 40 per cent limited slip differential. What else do you want from an insanely fast yet luxuriously premium sedan?.
