31-tue-may-2011-7General Motors recently held a design contest for young and aspiring design students
General Motors is known for being one of those companies that constantly look out for talented designers to design future cars of the company.

GM organises such design contests throughout the world and since India is one of the key markets for the company they gave students an opportunity to showcase their talent by organising this event. The event was to design a car that would suit the Indian requirements and be practical for production. The parameters that were set by the organisers included aesthetics and visual appeal, ergonomics, development potential and overall presentation. Almost 1000 entries were received for the contest which were filtered down to final 40 from which the winner was chosen. John Paul Xavier from Industrial Design Centre, IIT Mumbai emerged as the ultimate winner and another young man Sachin Panchal of DSK International School of Design, Pune was awarded with the runner-up trophy. The panel that analysed all the designs included Karl Slym – President and Managing Director, GM India, Anil Saini – Director, GM India Design, Global Network Team, Hormazd Sorabjee – motoring journalist and Sumit Sawhney – Vice President Sales, Marketing and After-Sales, GM India. The winner walked away with a brand new Chevrolet Beat.
